Title: Broadband in Pissouri Village (Not bay area) Post by: Villa Georgina on March 14 2009 03:54am ???
Hi eveyone, First post so not sure if anyone can help. I have a house on Kolokotroni St on the outskirts of Pissouri Village, which I rent out, and I would like to offer a broadband internet service to my guests, but I need to control the costs of this. I haven't currently got a fixed telephone line or any other type of connection in place, but my neighbour has an internet service provided by City Cell which I access from time to time using Wi-Fi for a one off monthly fee paid to City Cell. City Cell are trying to set up a PAYG service which my guests would log into and pay by Credit Card but the details are very unclear about how this is going to work and I need a connection before May 2009. I've looked at the Cyta-Voda USB modem route but (a) You can't seem to control download usage and (b) I don't even know if I can connect using one of these from where my house is located. Can anyone recommend a reliable service which has either got no limitations on usage or a PAYG which my guests could use? Cheers, Villa Title: Re: Broadband in Pissouri Village (Not bay area) Post by: Admin on March 14 2009 05:39pm Hello,
You can try cyprusbroadband.com which is based in Pissouri. They offer satellite based solutions, which are expensive, but they might be able to offer you connection via Wi-Fi as well. Title: Re: Broadband in Pissouri Village (Not bay area) Post by: Villa Georgina on March 15 2009 06:14am Hi
Thanks for coming back to me. Ouch! 1620 euros + Vat for installation is too much for me but I will keep looking. Anyone else got any suggestions please? Title: Re: Broadband in Pissouri Village (Not bay area) Post by: falconcy on March 22 2009 06:34am Satellite is not really an option for individual users. Even if you shell out for the hardware, the QoS that will be offered is not cheap and heavily shared. It doesn't matter which hardware platform you choose, iDirect, Hughes, Nera or Linkstar - the situation will be the same. One way systems will not be much cheaper as you still need to pay for dialup to be able to use the service.
In villages such as Pissouri the best option would be for the municipality or a large group of users to club together and buy a dedicated satellite link and share that wirelessly. The cost of dedicated connectivity is not going to be cheap, however it is the only way to get decent speed if you intend to share out the connection locally.
