Title: Moving To Cyprus - Some Q's Post by: StormWalker on December 04 2007 03:51pm Greetings
I should be moving to Cyprus in a few months time, and would like to get some un-biased feedback. Currently, here in South Africa, you have tel-line rental, dsl line rental, isp bandwidth costs (typically per/gb charge) I assume from reading the forum and looking at the pricing, that you pay a fixed amount for access, not usage ? If so, is there a "fair use" policy, or "soft cap" of no more than 100gb on say a 1mb line? (assume dif isps have dif policies) I'll be using the line pretty much at full throttle, and prob order several lines and blend them together. I'll prob start with NetRunner 1000/NetRunnerPlus, anyone on netrunner 1000 who can give feedback on http downloads, average speed on this type of line. Also, if possible ;D the wife plays world of warcraft, if someone could give ping results to 213.248.98.66. Thanx a stack !!! Quote I assume from reading the forum and looking at the pricing, that you pay a fixed amount for access, not usage ? That is correct. Quote If so, is there a "fair use" policy, or "soft cap" of no more than 100gb on say a 1mb line? (assume dif isps have dif policies) All companies have some limits on the amounts of bandwidth they will allow you to consume before they slow your connection down. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, non of the providers publicizes what those limits are. Quote I'll prob start with NetRunner 1000/NetRunnerPlus, anyone on netrunner 1000 who can give feedback on http downloads, average speed on this type of line. Netrunner is typically the slowest. While http downloads are usually fine, downloading via other means (ftp,p2p etc) can be extremely slow due to port filtering. Quote I'll be using the line pretty much at full throttle, and prob order several lines and blend them together. Using your bandwidth at full throttle 24/7 will almost certainly result in your speed being reduced after some point. From what I hear Wavespeed is the most "forgiving" at the time being and they might be your best bet. Also if you are in an area with Primetel coverage you might want to check out the FastLane packages of Netway. So its like our uncapped accounts We pay About 50 Euro for 1mb dsl line rental, Uncapped express 1mb 220 Euro with a "Soft Cap" of 60GB, and when you go over that limit they halve your speed. I'm not too worried about p2p because i created a multiuser utorrent system that runs on a server (Simular to torrentflux, but way more advanced) for a local isp here in SA as our broadband prices are redicoulous, so all downloads are straight http direct from the server. If they do slow you down, what speeds will one get on your average 1mb line? any known Softcap averages? Also, do you have to use there router? or can i use my own ? Thanx! Quote If they do slow you down, what speeds will one get on your average 1mb line? any known Softcap averages? Each ISP handles this differently and even the same ISP may apply a different "soft cap" during different periods depending on the load they experience. Nobody apart from the ISP will be able to answer this question and from my experience even those within the ISP that know their policy on this issue (usually this does not include the customer support) are reluctant to give a straight answer. Quote Also, do you have to use there router? or can i use my own ? They will provide you with an adsl "modem" which sometimes doubles as a router. However you can use your own router if you wish.
