A friend in another area of Limassol said theirs was down for most of the morning, they seem to think theirs is now upgraded. Ours at home is back online, apparently not stable (same situation as in the office) The office is definitely not upgraded yet.

Our home connection was down this morning, no idea if it is back online yet or upgraded. At work the Business connection is still at the former speed with some latency and packet loss during the morning. Anybody seen the advertised upgraded speed yet?

its nothing to do with the provider, you just need a router with a stronger signal, or maybe buy a hub but a good one in cyprus may cost a 100/200 euros, but if you use the rubbish ones like cyta send you then you wont be able to use it far away from the router/hub and no other isp will send you expensive ones

@paliometoxo - perhaps you can tell everybody just how I managed to get the stock Cyta issue Speedtouch 585 v7 to work fine in this particular scenario throughout the whole house without the need for additional hardware. The connection also miraculously sped up on other devices connected to the network, care to explain that too?

What operating system are you using?

For Win7 X64 there may be some issues, workaround here:

I had the same thing when trying to get a connection with Cyta. It's really kinda dumb as I've had a contract mobile phone with them for yonks. I had one of the old NMT900's and was amongst their first mobile subscribers. I ended up getting it sorted through the company I work for.

Which browser are you using? It could be proxy or security settings related. Try a different browser if you have one available.

Try opening a command prompt and pinging www.google.com.

It won't be easy to work out the issue without being physically there to look at it. The first question I would ask is where do you live? That way somebody near you can likely take a look at it for you. If it's Limassol, drop me a pm and we can arrange something.

Check:

The concept should roughly be the same as described on this site.

Downloading  everything purely for the sake of it somehow doesn't work for me, there are more things to do in life than watch every single TV series and movie that comes out, besides, there aren't enough hours in a day to watch them all. The only reason I can see for that level of downloading is as a dubious business by hawking pirate movies around pubs and markets. Most people on the Scene do not approve of making money from it.

Private trackers are the way to go with P2P for sure. As far as FTP downloads go, access to PreDB and the Scene does have it's advantages though I'm not so active these days due to work commitments. You do have to give something to get anything though and pubs don't always have the full catalogue.

Regarding Cyta's network infrastructure, if you actually paid attention you'd know that for the past 3-4 years they have been rolling out additional Remote DSLAM's and MSAN's which extend the range from the exchange way further than 3km, even over existing copper.

Dissing CYTA for the sake of it rather than acknowledging that the real villans are the bunch of lawyers sat in the regulator's office will do nothing to make things better. Cyta could offer GPON were they allowed to do so, they already have a pilot scheme operational in Archangelos with around 450 users connected, they will expand it further as and when the regulator allows them too.

GPON in case you don't understand the tech will allow Gigabit connectivity similar to what is available in most Scandinavian countries.

What actual difference will more speed make? I can already get streaming video fine. On a 4Mbit connection I can download an xvid rip in ~30 mins, higher quality in around an hour, I don't do DVD's or Blu-Rays as it seems pointless, kinda like the difference between downloading an album in mp3 format vs wav or flac, I certainly can't tell the difference. An 8Mbit connection will halve the time.

There are two things I have noticed as speed increases for us. Firstly that you eventually reach a point where there is very little left to download and secondly that download speed is also limited by the uplink speed of the person you are downloading from. In the vast majority of cases people are on asynchronous connections, meaning that their uplink is quite a bit slower than their downlink. Sure most P2P software can aggregate multiple connections to at least give the illusion of a fast download.

Primetel's 24 Mbit connections could well have a problem due to their really low uplink speed. This could well be an issue for all providers as it is my understanding that they can't deliver more than 1Mbit on the existing platforms. VDSL and GPON will allow those issues to be corrected. The other issue with a 24Mbit connection could well be due to the TV side of the triple play package as that too needs bandwidth.

I'm not sure yet, just waiting for it to actually happen. To be honest, 8Mbit is pretty much a sweet spot as you can do practically everything. Anything beyond that is more for bigger downloading.

I don't have a problem with the distance to the exchange, I can almost throw rocks at it from the veranda. That said, there are technologies that negate the distance from the exchange, even over copper.

It is blatantly obvious that the regulator has failed miserably. Despite a hostile regulatory environment as well as a few vociferous Cytaphobes, people are not leaving Cyta in their droves and going to Primetel.

Lets face it, the vast majority of "sheeple" just want a connection and all they care about is whether their latest Facebook Fetish actually works. It's only a few of the more hardcore users who actually understand what is happening.
13  Cyprus Broadband / ISP Reviews / Re: Cablenet Reviews on: December 08 2010 01:00am
What is holding Cyprus back more than anything is a bunch of government employed lawyers who work for the "regulator".

They serve nothing more than the interests of certain individuals and do nothing to benefit the consumer.

The alternative providers simply don't have the infrastructure nor the funding to deliver speeds like those being introduced elsewhere. Cyta have both the funding and the infrastructure and have done for quite a while. Cyta would have introduced higher speeds/lower prices yet are being prevented from doing so by the "regulator"

Cyta were amongst the first in Europe to invest in a Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) network based on Ericsson's GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) solution. This was in 2007!!!!!!

Cyta could theoretically already deliver Gigabit Internet similar to what exists in Sweden. The problem is the "regulator"
14  Cyprus Broadband / General Broadband Discussion / Re: cytanet upgrade 2 on: December 01 2010 12:04am
Tis now the 1st of December and thus far I'm not seeing any speed increase. There is also no announcement on Cyta or Cytanet's webpages. Looks like the Ministry for the Retardation of the Internet aka "the regulator" has once again screwed the consumer over.

Cyta are definitely ready though, checking the modem out I noticed:

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:   999 / 9.814

Did the usual logoff/logon and still nothing.
15  Cyprus Broadband / ISP Reviews / Re: Netrunner (Cytanet) Reviews on: November 21 2010 05:18am
There's no "official" confirmation concerning the upgrade with dates ranging from the beginning to the end of December being the most likely. From what I've managed to find out, things are still very much down to the regulator as to when and what Cyta are eventually allowed to do. In the meantime, the customer suffers due to the lack of competition. Perhaps the Competition Commissioner should look into the activities of the regulator as they seem to be solely responsible for the lack of any real competition on the island.
