10  Cyprus Broadband / General Broadband Discussion / Re: Cytanet WiFi on: January 25 2011 12:42pm
I'm typing this on my laptop downstairs because my new best friend and all round top bloke, falconcy, visited me today and sorted out all my problems. Well, I still need to play the piano better, and I'm not too happy with my hairdresser, but there wasn't much he could do about that.

He could, however, fix my WiFi connection and this he did with grace, humour, kindness and a great deal of clever stuff that I didn't always follow, but for which I am eternally grateful.

Thank you, thank you, thank you - and you even made the sun shine again during the visit. A true miracle worker.

its nothing to do with the provider, you just need a router with a stronger signal, or maybe buy a hub but a good one in cyprus may cost a 100/200 euros, but if you use the rubbish ones like cyta send you then you wont be able to use it far away from the router/hub and no other isp will send you expensive ones
11  Cyprus Broadband / General Broadband Discussion / Re: cytanet upgrade 2 on: January 24 2011 07:14pm
we already have 4mbits and 8mbits and even 20mbits on cable and adsl with 24mbits so we are not far behind, maybe a few years but what do you exppect from a country with a population of less then a million
12  Cyprus Broadband / General Broadband Discussion / Re: cytanet upgrade 2 on: January 17 2011 08:42am

13  Cyprus Broadband / Cyprus Broadband News / Re: Speed upgrades by all major providers on: January 14 2011 09:26am
i wish i could get cable but 8mbit adsl will have to do
14  Cyprus Broadband / General Broadband Discussion / Re: cytanet upgrade 2 on: January 05 2011 01:35pm
I agree speed is overrated.
Browsing speed on 20 is just the same as it is on 1mbps.
If you need something big downloaded you don't sit and wait for it to download - you schedule it, usually overnight.
Does it matter if the download will finish at 2am or at 5am?
There is not one half decent streaming VOD provider in Europe and the American providers are restricted.
The only "use" of high speed bandwidth is with online gaming and I don't do it Cheesy
Once people realize they don't need more than 1mbps the prices will go through the floor.
When they can not compete with speeds - they will have to compete with prices!
So if you want lower prices - do like I did - teach the greedy providers a lesson - downgrade to 1!

Unless you are an online gamer - in that case you just have to wait to grow up Grin

lol en paeis kala... 1mbit ?!?!?! why not just downgrade to 56k then hahaha i would hate to be forced on a crappy 1mbit again.. 4mbit is bad enough. when you dont want to leave your computer on 24/7 especially for downloads.. its not good when you leave it on all the time it over heats then you start to have problems...

it does matter.. only if you really dont do much online.. i have to accept 8mbit because i know i cant receive more but when i move to england i will for sure be on the 100mbit virgin media Cheesy they are rolling it out now so by 2012 every one in a cable area will have access to it

online gaming does not use so much but you need a better upload for online gaming
15  Cyprus Broadband / General Broadband Discussion / Re: cytanet upgrade 2 on: January 05 2011 09:28am
Downloading  everything purely for the sake of it somehow doesn't work for me, there are more things to do in life than watch every single TV series and movie that comes out, besides, there aren't enough hours in a day to watch them all. The only reason I can see for that level of downloading is as a dubious business by hawking pirate movies around pubs and markets. Most people on the Scene do not approve of making money from it.

Private trackers are the way to go with P2P for sure. As far as FTP downloads go, access to PreDB and the Scene does have it's advantages though I'm not so active these days due to work commitments. You do have to give something to get anything though and pubs don't always have the full catalogue.

Regarding Cyta's network infrastructure, if you actually paid attention you'd know that for the past 3-4 years they have been rolling out additional Remote DSLAM's and MSAN's which extend the range from the exchange way further than 3km, even over existing copper.

Dissing CYTA for the sake of it rather than acknowledging that the real villans are the bunch of lawyers sat in the regulator's office will do nothing to make things better. Cyta could offer GPON were they allowed to do so, they already have a pilot scheme operational in Archangelos with around 450 users connected, they will expand it further as and when the regulator allows them too.

GPON in case you don't understand the tech will allow Gigabit connectivity similar to what is available in most Scandinavian countries.

there is not one legit dvd store in cyprus and i never profit from any download, i watch them all maybe not in the same day but over a long period of time... as well as downloading firmwares iso's and many things, not forgetting in a lot of houses now everything is connected to the internet using a lot of bandwith..

but i never had a problem with cytanet just some times but not very often they have been very good to me.. i just hate adsl in general because i am not in a cable area..

i am going to be happy with 8mbit and stick with it.. i never had good experience with adsl and anything faster then 8mbit... i had 24mbit but copper wires meant no one ever recieved full speed even being right next to the exchange... i doubt these upgrades will change much.. but the connection is good and i think i will be happy and just stick with 8
