2  Cyprus Broadband / General Broadband Discussion / Re: Questions about Cablenet on: June 11 2009 09:49am
I used cablenet for a short while (3 months) and had no issues apart from a few at the beginning due to it being a new installation into the building.

Speeds were fast and it seemed unshared. I always got my max up and download speed on torretns ect.

Thank you for the advice,

I noticed a Hellas Sat dish yesterday and planned to call them. another provider i found was bentley walker from the UK who can server out here, although I don't like thier usage plans. They said once the monthyl usage allowance was up you dropped to near 56k - dialup speed, in which it is still counted as bandwidth usage and minused from the next month.

Hellas net claim to be unlimited? Can't see that?

a little unprofessional of them leaving that open to the public.

Hi guys,

Satellite Broadband - anyone have any experience with this.

After some reading up it seems it's cheapest to buy the equipment - dish and modem and then get a satellite guy to just point it in the right direction.
Does anyone know of any ISP's that I can use directly which cover Cyprus? I have 3 maybe 4 neighbours that are willing to chip in to so that we can get a better monthly usage allowance.

Not so fussed on speed 512 to 1 meg would be fine? The usage allowance is more important.

It seems some ISPS have a usage allowance and that is it, whilst others have a period in the night where larger downloads can be made without affecting your monthly usage allowance.

back with another question..

How long does it typically take cyta to reactivate an existing phone line and put broadband on it?

I don't want to go with cyta or primetel really; but it is so difficult to find an area cablenet cover in limassol...

Possibly the only platform available in your area is DSL Access (i-choice).

Cablenet is not available. You can check if PrimeTel is by entering your phone number at their website ( http://www.primehome.com/main/default.aspx ) but I am almost certain they do not cover the area near Grand Resort. So i-choice will be your only option.

Assuming that you do not want to get a business connection, which is way more expensive, then 512K up is not available. The speeds available are 2Mbit or 4Mbit down, and 384Kb up.

The best deal would be combining I-choice with Otenet 2Mbit package. If you don't mind to pay more then you can have a look at the 4mbit packages by Wavespeed and Netway.

So is this right?

If I was to go down the cyta route I would need:
Cyta Self installation 39.30 - does it include a telephone line or is that just purely for the broadband connection?
cyta i-choice Home2000 2Mbps/384kbps for €25.30 a month
OTE-NET 2Mbps / 384Kbps for €16.56 a month

making 41.86 Euros a month for a 2mbps connection?

Oh and another question for you people who use cablenet. What Router are you using?
I guess cable net provide you with a cable modem with which you can bridge your own router to? correct?

I need something with QOS for VOIP so I was thinking about one of the new Draytek's...

Thanks for the advice admin and efrem.

Looks like I wont be getting an office there then. Instead I will look at mesa geitonia as I thought i would have to.
Cablenet seem the only sensible-ish priced and reliable ISP on the island.

Hi guys,

Can you recommend a broadband connection for Amathoundos Ave, Limassol which is
basically near the Grand Resort Hotel (used to be called Hawaii Beach Hotel).

After reading reviews cablenet seem the best bet for me but they only seem to serve mesa geitonia in limassol?

I'm after a "reliable" broadband service with a minimum of 2mbps down and 512k up and no traffic shapping or high contention ratio.
I have done a bit of reading and it seems all the ADSL providers traffic shape and don't offer a good contention ratio.

Does anyone know the max speed available in this area?
