Hi guys,

Satellite Broadband - anyone have any experience with this.

After some reading up it seems it's cheapest to buy the equipment - dish and modem and then get a satellite guy to just point it in the right direction.
Does anyone know of any ISP's that I can use directly which cover Cyprus? I have 3 maybe 4 neighbours that are willing to chip in to so that we can get a better monthly usage allowance.

Not so fussed on speed 512 to 1 meg would be fine? The usage allowance is more important.

It seems some ISPS have a usage allowance and that is it, whilst others have a period in the night where larger downloads can be made without affecting your monthly usage allowance.

I think that there are two main ISP's Hellas Sat and Hughes that provide two-way coverage here. With Hughes they have the dreaded FAP (fair access policy) and slow the connection if the usuage limits are exceeded. Hellas Sat claim to not do this, however the service seems to be greatly shared, and reports of slowing to 128k for a 1mb connection are not unusual. With Hughes, 3-4 users would need the office 1000 service at least, which from memory is about €200 per month. Hellas Sat do not recommend sharing the connection.

Personally, I would not use satellite if there was any other option available, but it depends on your location of course.

Thank you for the advice,

I noticed a Hellas Sat dish yesterday and planned to call them. another provider i found was bentley walker from the UK who can server out here, although I don't like thier usage plans. They said once the monthyl usage allowance was up you dropped to near 56k - dialup speed, in which it is still counted as bandwidth usage and minused from the next month.

Hellas net claim to be unlimited? Can't see that?
