Business packages are direct to the net and do not go through NAT. There is no login procedure, you are either connected or not. Contention ratio is around 20:1 as opposed to 50:1 with home packages. There does not appear to be any traffic shaping or ports being blocked.

Come to think of it. I have been in Cyta Netrunner and not noticed any ports being restricted. I run VoIP applications without issues. There was a period of very poor upload (Like 32kbs) but a good telling off and it strangly starteed working again.

Still waiting for the 2048/512 service. Then I can have better upload speeds, and run 2 or 3 concurrent calls.

Did you use any P2P for downloads? Thats where most of the port filtering goes! I also wait to see when i-choice will upgrade to 2Mbps because where I live there is no Primetel or Otenet network so i-choice is the only choice  Undecided

On a Business Lite package, I use Bittorrent and Limewire from time to time. Never had a problem with it. There are other factors which will affect your speeds when using this type of program.

Your upload speed can degrade your download speed. With 128k upload, once your uplink is saturated, it will slow down your connection exponentially. Increasing the uplink speed will actually help things. Ideally you need a ratio of 1:4 between upload and download speeds, that seems to be pretty much optimum. With a 1:8 ratio, as in 128k:1mbit, you can run into some problems.

The increase of the uplink to 512k has actually solved one of the main issues. Try uploading an attachment by email and web browsing at the same time. You will discover that the web browsing is really slow during the uplink. This will be worse on a 128k:1mbit than it will be on a 512k:1mbit. P2P will cause similar problems due to the way the protocol works.

Bear in mind too that the majority of users are on asymmetrical connections like we are, so their uplink speeds are less than their downlink speeds. Then there are those users who are firewalled or those users who are located in areas that have routing that is not particularly good when connecting from here. Some countries have very fast speed within the country and really slow links to the rest of the internet.

Also take on board that you do get what you pay for. The priority you will get on the cheapest package will be nowhere near what you will get on the more expensive packages. Then there is traffic shaping, this is used by ISP's to ensure everybody in a particular class of users gets fair use of the connection.

A user who is downloading heavily will eventually degrade the service for other users. Remember you are actually sharing a particular amount of bandwidth with a given numbers of other users. Normally on home packages, there is a contention ratio of 50:1, meaning you are sharing your 1mbit package with 50 other users. On a business package, this is down to 20:1 so you share the bandwidth with 20 other users.

Playing fair will not limit your connectivity, however hammering things could well result in some degree of throttling of your connection. All providers eventually do this, especially when they reach a certain number of users. An ISP with fewer users may well give a seemingly faster connection and this is normal as they want to attract more users.

Primetel is "new" and wants to attract users. Those who have been around a while may remember Thunderworx which was the forerunner of Primetel. They too were good at the start. Then they started to limit users which is what Primetel will eventually do when their user base reaches critical mass.

It is not always a problem with your ISP when things are slow. Slow connectivity can be caused by network problems outside your local network. Another thing to check out is your operating system. XP and Vista actually limit the number of connections and this can slow some things down, especially with P2P. There are patches available to reset these limits to more acceptable values.

Business Lite is 45 pounds more expensive! I guess they do not filter ports on that one. But try using P2P with home package of Cytanet and you will see how slow it is. Playing fair means they should tell me what are the limits before I buy from them! If they filter some ports they should say it. If they don't then they are the ones who are not playing fair I think!
