Hi All

Generaly the main reason why we have high prices in Cyprus ( and don't believe what you hear from the ISPs) is that if you own the Landing station were all the marine cables come into Cyprus ( CYTA) then you control everything, the notion that we have clean, good competition here is a mith, CYTA owns the key to the door to the rest of the world and can still amke its own rules.

Louisiana city offers 50Mbps fiber for $58
Lafayette, Louisiana yesterday revealed that it will soon become one of the first significant US cities to deploy a municipality-run fiber optic Internet connection. Lafayette Utilities System plans to launch the service with a combination of Internet, phone and TV services and will offer them either as part of bundles or as individual options. Internet service tops out as high as 50Mbps both downstream and upstream and will offer more bandwidth still for connections between users on the same network, doubling to 100Mbps.

Early service is expected to start next month and will see a basic 10Mbps symmetric Internet connection cost $29 per month; 30Mbps will cost $45 per month, while the top-end 50Mbps plan will cost $58 per month. Bundles, known as VIP deals, range from a starter $85 deal that includes 80 TV channels, 10Mbps data and phone service to a $200 Gold package that carries 250 regular stations, HD and premium stations, 50Mbps Internet access and unlimited long distance phone calling.

The rollout takes place over four major stages and should be completed by 2011, the utility firm says.

Lafayette's fiber comes despite significant opposition to the deal and others like it in the US from cable and DSL providers Cox and AT&T, both of whom have publicly objected and are believed to have quietly funded private lawsuits attempting to thwart the plan for city-wide fiber.

Much of the resistance is believed to come from fears of competition, as the Lafayette Utility System is estimated to cost about 20 percent less per month than the strictly private alternatives but is also as fast as otherwise very expensive services such as Comcast's DOCSIS 3 and Verizon's FIOS, both of which cost at least $140 per month for 50Mbps Internet service alone

The truth is that in fact all providers can offer better prices but they have no incentive to do so because currently cyta is being restricted by the OCECPR and monopoly law. In essense the private providers are right now charging too much making huge profits in order to build up their network. Since they are already making significant profit there is no reason to decrease prices and in effect gain more subscribers because once they gain significant market share cyta will no longer be restricted and will fight back.

To sum it up
yes they are charging too much and with clever advertising (free crappy laptop)they are luring ignorant customers when in fact their pricing is only about 50 cents cheaper than cyta. So for 50 cents you are getting
1. 2 year contract
2. The hussle of a new installation and the price u will need to pay
3. a crappy laptop
4. Bad to shitty customer service
5. terrible terms and conditions / fair use policy

and all of the above for the amazing offer of being behold!!!! 50 cents cheaper than cyta.  Shocked

On the other hand you can go to cablenet and with 23 euros which is half the price of any other provider and say no thanks to their sneaky marketing.

A lot of primetel customers are already leaving for cablenet already as indicated in the last survey released by the OCEcPR

http://www.ocecpr.org.cy/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=2687&tt=ocecpr&lang=gr

So if you want things to improve our only hope is that cablenet gets all of primetels customers so that they wake up and realise that they have other competition besides cyta.

P.S. Efrem pls do not hijack or post irrelevant things on this thread.

Hmm that is a few days ago. So please stop hijacking threads and spamming the forum with irrelevant issues. You do not need to reply on each and every thread when you have nothing relevant to say.
